Nearly 70 leading Indian organizations and experts launched
a nation-wide drive to adhere to environmental norms before
clearing projects, which are damaging the country\'s fragile
ecology. The petitioners believe the govt is systematically
undermining the importance of environmental issues in
decision-making, and paying scant attention to Environment
Impact Assessment reports.

The recent simplification of environmental clearance
process announced by the Ministry of Environment and
Forests has further diluted the country\'s environmental
regulation, one that is already considered toothless.
The investment limit that necessities clearance has
been raised from Rs 500 M to Rs 1 B for new projects.
More projects will now stay out of the radar screen.

Sarpanches of Manguluru and Bhujabalapatnam of Krishna district and Kokkirayalanka and Kedavaram of west Godavari district will soon form Biodiversity Management Committees with seven members. Mahanadi panel The Biodiversity Board is encouraging people to form such management committees after the success of the Mahanandi Biodiversity Management Committee. The Mahanandi Committee, in association with the State Biodiversity Board, issued a notice to the Monsanto Company that used the Bt bacteria found in the soil of Mahanandi in Kurnool district for developing the indigenous version of Bt cotton capable of resisting Indian bollworm strains. Though Monsanto was not willing to consider royalty payments, it offered to build roads and contribute to other physical and social infrastructure in Mahanandi area as part of “benefit-sharing.”
